MEET THE TEAM: JORDAYN KARLOWSKY

We would like to warmly welcome our newest member of the team, Jordayn! Jordayn joins our design team as a Junior Project Designer. We sat down with her  to gain some insight into her experience, hobbies, and thoughts on Atlantic Canada thus far!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba and I grew up in a family of farmers, entrepreneurs and leaders. My family members were fantastic role models and through them I learnt the importance of hard work and dedication from a very young age. The concept of hard work paired with enjoying thinking outside of the box allowed me to pursue the challenge of my Bachelor of Environmental Design from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. I always enjoyed creative work such as drawing and painting, but sought out a more structured form of creativity. This is what led me to Environmental Design and Architecture.

What is your past experience?

I began doing freelance work for residential and commercial clients during the third year of my degree. This allowed me to explore client relations and budgeting, as well as implementing some of the design delivery techniques I had already been taught in school. Immediately after graduation in May of 2023 I started working as a designer at a cabinetry company. This role allowed me to explore cabinetry and all of its possibilities, which was significantly more than I ever expected. I mostly worked on residential kitchens and bathrooms. The best part about the role, was that, for most projects, I almost acted as the project manager from concept to construction, which allowed me to ensure that every detail of the project was done in the way that it was intended from the very beginning.

What is your favorite project you ever worked on?

My favourite project that I ever worked on was a hypothetical project from the last year of my degree. We were given the task of designing a nature centre that overlooked the Red River in Winnipeg and I designed a space that directly reflected both the natural and economic landscape of Downtown Winnipeg. The direction that my design took allowed me to develop a speakeasy in the basement of the building with a menu tailored to the natural landscape surrounding the building. It was my favourite project because of the many functions that the design had and the level of creative leighway I was given due to it being a hypothetical project (AKA no budget).

What are your hobbies?

In my spare time I love to garden. In the winter I like to propagate plants, start them from seed and plan out my garden for the following summer. I take great pride in how my yard looks and work very hard to keep it in tip-top shape. I also have a dog that I love to spend time with. His name is Jimmie and he is four years old. Together, we go on walks, play at the dog park and spend many hours cuddling.
